Beach Burrito, Newtown -- or -- I know what you're doing this Summer

There's something about Mexican restaurants that makes me use garish colours, Molly. Sorry about that.

I didn't realise this was a chain restaurant until I arrived. My natural response was disdain. But why? It's not a multinational corporation. Just successful. And even if it was an imported food chain -- say, American -- does that make it bad? Aren't they closer to Mexico anyway?

Prejudice aside, it was a different vibe to other places in Newtown. Definitely going for the laid-back, 'street' ambience. But with a strong Mexican flavour. (Which is more than can be said for the chips & salsa.)

Further up King St you'll find (chain) Guzman y Gomez, and right up the city end is Izote. Mad Mex is opening soon up that end as well. Also Jester Seeds. And I hear there is another new Mexican place in Enmore?
[And, it seems, a few more on Enmore Rd: Jalapeno Tex-Mex; and El Cuervo.]

Mexican: the new Thai?

  1. I've never even heard of this place - good find Detective! And I wish that Mexican was the new Thai...if only we could get it right in Sydney, eh?

  3. I wondered what this was like! And I usually react the same towards chains but some are good like Din Tai Fung :)

  5. When they opened up in Cronulla I was tempted to pop in for the breakfast menu. Hmm still seem to have not got around to it.

  6. Totally agree. Was also very disappointed considering some of the fantastic Mexican restaurants that have popped up in Aus in the past few years.

  7. Yup, I reckon Mexican may be the new Thai on the Newtown strip. Mad Mex is about to open its doors as well, adding its own franchise to the mix.

  9. Agree with food quality vs ambience balance. $5 cans of imported mexican beer are the highlight here, especially on a rare for Sydney this summer night.
