Hartsyard, Newtown -- or -- Noisy neighbours

Hartsyard. There was a buzz about it even before it opened. Perhaps in part because of their own blog on the development phase? Whatever it was, bloggers and print media alike flocked.

On the first visit I let Gaby (Lateral Eating) do most of the ordering. On the return visit I asked the server, Sanina (with apologies for the probably atrocious spelling) for her recommendations. That was a winning tactic.

Hartsyard bills itself as "share food", but I don't know how well that label holds up. Sure, you wouldn't really want to eat a whole plate of the pulled pork or poutine on your own, but it doesn't share easily. Best to go with good friends, or it could end in a knife fight.

The only other thing I could have wanted on the night was some soft bread to soak up all the gravy, sauces and goodies. Of course, that might have meant one fewer dish, as by the end there was little room left for dessert. I soldiered on, though, Molly. I remembered my training: There is always room for dessert.

As for that cake. My goodness. Decadent doesn't even begin to explain it. It was supposed to be for 6-8 people, but made 10 slices and they could have been shared. Only two out of seven people finished a whole slice.

Let's just average the two visits out at $40 per head each time, shall we Molly? No BYO, so maybe a little extra...

  3. The $40p/h price guide does not include the bespoke cake, FYI.

    1. Yep, a special order. They let you order a 'bespoke cake' in advance -- give them at least a few days notice and a flavour profile and they'll go nuts.

  9. I've been wanting to go to Hartsyard for months, ever since I heard they had a version of poutine. Sadly, every time I've tried, it's been super-busy, or on a day they're closed. That makes me sad. The pictures make me jealous.
