Newtown Burger Grudge Match: Dean's Diner, Newtown

Last month three Newtown Burger Joints -- some called them 'chains' or 'franchises' -- went bunno-a-bunno in a food fight to the death. "But wait," the crowd called. "You forgot someone. The little guy. The local favourite. The place with the arcade game tables and the funny burger names. Go on. Give Dean's a chance."

Detective Chow is listening.

Finished the night with a Hippy Hippy Shake ($6), served in an original battered metal shake cup. Thick and delicious. There's no way you could leave hungry.

  1. You've gotta love an old school burger. Fortunate to me, Dean's is just up the road from my house!

    1. We live so close -- surely we'll bump into each other in a restaurant one of these days.

  3. Awesome blog post :) I will have to check it out. Too many burger joints dont have shakes. WHAT KIND OF BURGER JOINT DOESNT HAVE SHAKES???

  4. The fries look a little, er, flaccid and wan.

    1. Definitely not flaccid. They have quite a thick skin on them so no droopiness that I noticed. As for the colour... yeah, I think 'lightly golden' might be a bit of a stretch. (But note also that I'm pretty ruthless with my white balance setting.) Maybe ask for your chippies well done, though, just in case.

  5. Glad to see you covered the good old Dean's. A big plus for me is that is one of the few places in the area where you can find food until late.

    1. Never would have tried it if it wasn't an assignment. The fish'n'chip shop "Hamburger" sign out the front makes it so easy to walk past if yo're not thinking about greasy deep fried stuff. Glad I tried it though -- nice place and lovely people. Dean himself came and sat at the table to chat with us.
(He's very cute, and about 3 years old.)
